model cornerstone assessments
for the past two years i’ve been involved in the model cornerstone assessments related to the national core art standards. in 2015 i helped evaluate and select elementary level samples for the model cornerstone assessments (mcas). working with dr. bob sabol, i was part of a team of five who helped assess learning through the new visual arts standards created for this level.
i choose to pilot the secondary level mca’s in my classroom the spring of 2016. i learned a lot about all that is involved in how to best demonstrate what our students know and understand through the portfolio.
i was also asked by dr. sabol to step in and evaluate the secondary mcas in the summer of 2016. i will have a chance to present both of these experiences in two sessions at the naea convention in new york in march 2017 and we will detail the process of benchmarking over 5,000 samples of student work.
