An art education researcher and a high school visual arts educator collaborated in a digital making project directly addressing an issue of national preoccupation reflected in the fragmented and divided realities existing in the United States today—immigration. Our experiences as a high school educator in a district of significant immigrant population and a higher education researcher who is an immigrant herself shaped our intentions to critically respond to the inadequacies of educational practices that overlook the perspectives, interests, and capabilities of students. We entered a partnership that sought to articulate, share, and reflect upon the narratives and experiences of today’s students through a practice-based and inquiry project using digital storytelling. One of our intended outcomes was to facilitate that other art educators nationwide could vicariously understand the nuanced realities of their own students.
