How do we navigate life’s unexpected twists? For nationally recognized artist and educator James Rees, the answer lies in embracing discomfort and using creativity as a tool for growth. In this episode, Rees shares how his art explores themes of burdens, resilience, and support—and how one deeply moving moment at an art show changed his perspective on the power of connection and healing. When a woman purchased one of his pieces to honor her sister who died by suicide, Rees saw firsthand how art can give meaning to grief and transform pain into purpose. After 30 years of teaching and serving as a panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts, he reflects on the lessons he’s learned about courage, creativity, and the beauty of embracing uncertainty.
Curator James Walton reflects on the rich lineage of this movement, which draws inspiration from Dada, Mad Magazine, Surrealism, and psychedelic art, championed by pioneers like Robert Williams, who coined the term Low Brow Art.
This exhibition invites visitors to embrace the humor, creativity, and cultural critique found in these boundary-breaking works, highlighting their influence from comic books to trading cards, movie posters, and beyond.
“The Weird Cartoons, Kitsch and Culture of Low Brow Art” will take place at the George S. & Dolores Doré Eccles Gallery at our South City campus from January 16 – February 21. Art drop off will be Jan. 14. The opening reception will be Jan 16.
The exhibit will feature (mostly) local artists who work in styles related to cartoons and other sequential art (comic books, graphic novels, Manga, etc.), also graffiti, tattoos, Naïve / Outsider Art and similar themes in an attempt to highlight, elevate, and create a dialogue around artforms that have been traditionally looked down upon in the fine art world … with an emphasis on the weird.

E. Hopper
Son of a writer and a dancer, with brothers in music and photography, artist, arts advocate, and art mentor James M. Rees (BFA ’89) found his own art and got a degree in drawing at BYU. He followed that up with an MFA in printmaking from the University of Arizona. His mentorship by BYU art faculty inspired him to provide the same for others, teaching high school art for 30 years and becoming a commissioner of the National Art Education Association. Rees sees art as a way of communicating and connecting as well as a path of inquiry—“a conversation with myself that I share with others,” he says. “Good teaching and good art-making, I think, are just being true to yourself and then trying to be honest with others.”

The Art of James and John Rees. Lifelong artists and educators, brothers James and John Rees share recent works in an exhibition examining two diverging styles born of a shared history.
We’re celebrating National Arts in Education week with James Rees, an accomplished visual artist and arts educator who has spent decades advocating for the importance of arts education. Rees talks about his early inspirations, his time at Brigham Young University, and his unexpected path to teaching. He emphasizes the need for student-centered learning in the arts and the importance of allowing students to find their own creative voices through critical thinking and exploration. Rees also shares how his own studio practice informs his teaching and how failure is an essential part of the creative process. And we touch upon his upcoming show at Wisconsin’s Trout Museum of Art.
Rees also discusses the significance of mentorship, providing young artists with opportunities to engage with professionals and showcase their work in public spaces. Rees reflects on his leadership roles, including his advocacy work for the arts at the local, state, and national levels; his times as panelist for the NEA; and how these efforts have impacted both arts education and the wider arts community. This conversation offers an exploration of the impact of art education on students’ lives and the transformative power of making and sharing art.

The Lesser Chaos” is a celebration of Abstract Art and all the exciting and unexpected forms it takes. This group exhibition showcases the work of 33 local artists, providing an opportunity for us to develop our relationship with modern abstract art by experiencing in-person the many wildly different mediums being explored by this diverse group of talented artists. By pushing the boundaries and definitions of what we perceive abstract art to be, these artists encourage the viewer to embrace the intangible. They dare you to feel the energy and motion of an expressionist gesture, to engage with the radical act of creation through risk and lawlessness and the unconscious mind, to look beyond the decorative act of reproduction and allow the glorious spirit of abstraction to inspire some reflection. What is reality? What is abstraction? In the unbridled chaos that is the year 2024, is it so crazy to choose the latter?
